                        PRINCIPAL'S CORNERS

August 2021

Dear Students, Parents, and Community,

On behalf of the entire SMHS staff, welcome to the first phases of the 2021-22 school year. I am genuinely excited to be preparing for this quickly approaching school year as it symbolizes the end of a long struggle against the Corona Virus and the hopeful return to normalcy for our school and our community. At this time all preparations are for our "in person" return to the pre-pandemic calendar, daily bell schedule, and routines we enjoyed before the pandemic changed all our lives. As we continue to immerge from the preventative restrictions of COVID 19 it seems both staff and students are coming into this school year with a renewed energy and an appreciation for our school.

As most of you know Santa Maria High School is the "Home of the Saints" and is located in the heart of Santa Maria spanning 128 years of history and community pride. SMHS has an incredible staff devoted to preparing our students for success after high school. Last year we enjoyed a graduation rate over 90%, which is well above the state average for high schools. Of these 569 graduates 235 met qualifications to attend a 4-year college. With an addition 175 students planning to attend Allen Hancock College we have almost 75% percent of our graduates declaring themselves to a 2-year or a 4-year college. We also have more students completing career pathways than ever before due to our 16 Career & Technology Educational (CTE) pathways recently added to our curriculum.

If you have driven past SMHS lately you probably noticed another exciting development on our campus. Earlier this spring construction began on a rather expansive construction project which will leave our students with a state-of-the-art, fifty-classroom building and one of the most beautiful campuses in the area. There will be more information coming as we go through the many stages of this exciting project.

Santa Maria High School also offers a multitude of extra-curricular activities including athletics, visual and performing arts, vocational education, and a robust list of clubs and community service opportunities. We encourage all of our students to take advantage of what SMHS has to offer and leave here prepared for a successful life after high school. With facilities improving and academic indicators on the rise there is a positive momentum at SMHS that is enjoyed by students, staff, and parents. For more information about SMHS please browse through our website at www.santamariahighschool.org. I look forward to working with all of you, get ready for a great year, and "Go Saints"!

Sincerely,

Steve Campbell
