Mrs. DeMatteo is a graduate of Brandman (formerly Chapman) University, with a Bachelor's Degree in Social Sciences and has her teaching credentials in Social Science as well as a credential to teach at the Elementary school level. Prior to her education at the University level, she attended Cuesta College in San Luis Obispo, CA, and before that, graduated from Morro Bay High School, class of 1993.

In addition, since completing her teaching credentials in 2003, Mrs. DeMatteo has twice attended a "Spanish Institute for Foreigners" at the University of Guadalajara in Jalisco, Mexico.

Mrs. DeMatteo (formerly Ms. Tomsick) began her teaching career working as a Literacy tutor at an elementary school in a neighboring district, but knew that working with High Schoolers was where she really wanted to be! Soon after, she was thrilled to be offered a job in the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District.

She has taught here in the SMJUHSD since 2005. The first three years were in a small, alternative-education program for Freshman called the Freshman Opportunity Academy. She taught elective courses that included Study Skills, Geography and even Health.

In 2008, Mrs. DeMatteo transferred to Santa Maria High School where she has been a proud member of its Social Sciences department, teaching Modern World History and US History (10th and 11th grade courses). She has also had the pleasure of teaching these same two history subjects to "newcomers"--that is to say, students who are relatively new to the country and are still in the intense process of learning English.

Nicole DeMatteo was raised by her hardworking mother in Morro Bay, CA. Being an only-child made her very comfortable with adults, especially her grandparents and their friends. Her loving Grandma and Grandpa inadvertently inspired in Nicole two of her passions: history and travel. They never tired of taking her along in their little motorhome to local beaches and on long-distance trips like going to see family in Minnesota. And, their stories of life during the Great Depression and World War II left quite an impression on the future History Teacher.

Mrs. DeMatteo worked her way through college by waitressing, always managing to save a little extra for travel. She has been to about half of the states of the US, and has been to Canada, Germany, Switzerland, Italy and Thailand. Best of all, however, were the months she has spent traveling around Mexico and Costa Rica, including a few Central American countries along the route, where she continued to improve her developing Spanish skills.

She now stays close to home, caring for her two young children with the help of her wonderful husband. Mrs. DeMatteo enjoys cooking and baking for, and with, her family. She also loves to garden, collect eggs from her 6 chickens (Rita, Nugget, Golden Penny, Henny Penny, Rocky Road and Blue) and to grow fruits and vegetables in her backyard.
