Dear Parents and Guardians,

As we progress through the Fall Semester, the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District (SMJUHSD) is actively planning for the Spring Semester of 2021. Our scheduled first day of instruction for students is Wednesday, January 13th. As many of you know, schools and districts all over the state are considering bringing students back to campus in January in reduced numbers to help minimize the potential spread of Covid-19 among students and staff. The SMJUHSD is also planning on returning students to campus at some point in January in accordance with these guidelines. We also understand that there are many unknowns. As the parent or guardian of a high school student, you will need to make a personal decision about what learning environment is best for your student and your family.

SMJUHSD is committed to meeting the needs of students and families. A parent survey was sent out last month and a strong majority of responses indicated that most (about 60%) parents want their students to return to campus for in-person instruction.  In order to plan for spring, we now need to know as precisely as possible how many of you wish to return, or remain in Distance Learning. Since our current plan is to return in a 50% Hybrid Model, we want to make certain it is clearly understood what that means, so we have described it below:

CLASSROOM INSTRUCTION/HYBRID 50%:  This model would mean that your student would come to campus twice each week.  The Bell Schedule would be the same as the Distance Learning model we currently use, except instead of ‘Zooming’ with teachers on either Tues/Thurs or Wed/Fri, the students will come to campus and be in class on those days with their teachers.  The classrooms will not be full, however, they would be at (approximately) 50% capacity, with the other 50% of students working from home.  Keeping the classes at 50% will help minimize the potential spread of Covid as fewer students can be safely spaced inside classrooms to maintain physical distancing requirements.  Masks and other safety protocols will be necessary for this model.

The other option would be to remain in the current distance learning model, where instruction takes place from home, via Zoom.

You only need to return this electronic form if you want your student to REMAIN in distance learning and NOT return to campus for Hybrid instruction in January.  If this is your choice, please CLICK HERE and complete the attached link and click submit.
